Fox blackout on Cablevision ends after 14 day standoff, glaring contest continues on

Evidently missing the first two games of the World Series was about all Cablevision thought it subscribers could take, as news just hit the wire: the fourteen-day standoff is over and both tonight's game three of the World Series and tomorrow's Jets vs Packers game are available to subscribers. While these carriage disputes are pretty common, it is very rare for channels to be pulled and downright unheard of for a channel as popular as Fox. It came to this because Cablevision was very unhappy about News Corp's new terms and after many pleas to the FCC and politicians to intervene, an advertising campaign, and eventually an unaccepted offer to match the price that Time Warner Cable pays, a deal has finally been done. Not exactly all's well that ends well, though, as Cablevision released the following statement: "In the absence of any meaningful action from the FCC, Cablevision has agreed to pay Fox an unfair price for multiple channels of its programming including many in which our customers have little or no interest." Talk about sour grapes. Well at least we can hope that Cablevision's efforts paid off a little bit and your cable bill won't go up as much as it would've if the outage never occurred to begin with. We can hope.

OnStar's MyLink smartphone apps now available on Android and iOS

Looking to spend a little quality time with your ride this weekend? If you just plunked down for a 2011 Chevrolet or Cadillac, and you just so happen to own an Android or iOS-based phone, you can now download the myChevrolet, myCadillac, and OnStar MyLink mobile phone apps that were duly introduced last month. We're told that the Buick and GMC versions will be launched in November, with the whole crew enabling owners to access vehicle-specific information, vehicle diagnostics, and even lock / unlock the doors. There's still no word on widespread Facebook integration, but hey, baby steps... right?

Dutch police manipulate botnet to warn infected users

The battle against malware sure has changed over the past couple of years. It's no longer you and I in our chairs at home armed only with knowledge and an antivirus app. No, today's fight against trojans, botnets, and other software evil-doers involves everyone from lawyers to the police.

In the case of the recent Bredolab botnet, it was the Dutch police who stepped up. Following a concerted effort involving members of several security firms and the Dutch National Crime Squad, more than 140 Bredolab servers were seized. Here's where this story really gets good.

After they successfully gained control of the servers, the Dutch Police put the botnet to creative use -- pushing notifications to infected users and providing links to a removal tool. Sophos Labs' Graham Cluely mentions that as many as 30 million PCs may have been infected by Bredo, so what better way to notify users than via the botnet's own plumbing?

IE9 Beta downloaded 10 million times, more details on Developer Preview 6

A few moments ago Dean Hachamovitch took the stage at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference, summarily bounced around, and then gave us the news: IE9 Beta has now been downloaded over 10 million times, in just six weeks.

Today also sees the release of Platform Preview 6, which unfortunately -- as far as non-developers are concerned -- doesn't feature any significant outwardly-facing changes. Under the hood, however, there have been lots of bug fixes and performance enhancements. News is good on the standards-compliance front, too: IE9 now has support for CSS3 2D transforms and HTML5 semantic tags. For further details, check the release notes.

The real question, though, revolves around IE9 Beta 2. When is it due? And if the rumors about IE9 launching in January 2011 are true, is there even time for a second beta?

ASUS lays out Armdroid and Wintel tablet plans, we already feel overwhelmed

Leave it to ASUS to blast out an entire series of tablets that saturate the market in a single go. Many of these have already been mentioned, leaked, or even revealed at trade shows. But now we've got company president, Jerry Shen, filling in the launch details. Starting in December, ASUS will begin launching tablets in 7-, 9-, 10-, and 12-inch form factors. The 12-inch model will run Windows on an Intel chipset and be ready for purchase in January. Of interest, Shen says that Microsoft assisted in the development by making several enhancements to related technologies including touch control and the user interface. In March ASUS will launch a pair of 7 inchers (one with WiFi and the other with "3.5G" and phone functions) and another pair of 9-inch tablets (an ARM-based Tegra 2 model running Android and another Wintel tablet) with a price gap of $100. Of course, we've see a 10-incher around as well. That means we should see a grand total of five or six tablets from ASUS at CES in January. Fun.

Chinese Supercomputer Blazes Path to Glory

China has unveiled the world's fastest supercomputer, the Tianhe-1A, at a high-performance computing conference in Beijing. The Tianhe-1A has a Linpack benchmark performance of 2.507 petaflops, according to Nvidia, whose Tesla M2050 graphics processing units were used in the supercomputer.
